Jimmy Buffet

Margaritaville

Sipping a cocktail away on the beach on a lazy summer day depicts a very relaxed an vivid image amongst the listener. But things aren't as rosey as they seem. Margaritaville isn't about some vacation or happy place but about this little escape of paradise in all our heads where we can reflect on life's problems. "Some people claim that there's a woman to blame" begins to paint a bleak picture while the main character is "wasting away in Margaritaville." Then the line "help me hang on" comes up. This isn't a song about being on vacation and sipping drinks at some beach resort. There was a failed relationship followed by the guy wasting what is left of his life getting drunk on margaritas at the beach.

The song goes from the lines "it's nobody's fault" to "hell, it could be my fault" to finally "it's my own damn fault."
