Sia
Chandelier
While most think of the song as a party anthem with the chorus "1-2-3 drink / throw em back til I lose count" being sung over and over again, the song is actually about the trials the songwriter and singer Sia went through while battling alcoholism. But how can we blame the listeners of the catchy song when it starts out with "party girls don't get hurt." When Sia was 21, her boyfriend was killed by a taxi. Following this tragedy, Sia spent the next six years drinking and doing drugs. She began singing during this time of her life also with her music gaining popularity. The pressure the fame brought her took her further into depression. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. At the age of 35, she wanted to quit music. She called her drug dealer and bought everything he had. She stashed the drugs away so they'd be available at the right moment. Four months later, she felt the time was right. She never went through with it, but the song chronicles the events. She later went to rehab and got the help she needed. Lyrics: But I'm holding on for dear life Won't look down, won't open my eyes Keep my glass full until morning light 'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight Help me, I'm holding on for dear life Won't look down, won't open my eyes Keep my glass full until morning light 'Cause I'm just holding on for tonight On for tonight
